London Theatre Workshop - 13-16 April

Picture
 Josh and Steph live down the corridor from Dave and Gemma in rented studio apartments. Josh works in property, setting up deals for overseas buyers looking to bury their money in a city where prices continue to rise. Steph is a solicitor, drawing up paperwork for his clients. Josh and Steph are thinking big. This is just a stopping place for them.

Dave wants to escape the world of local newspapers by exposing the truth about the money the London property bubble is built on. Gemma is a supply teacher who moved to London to be with him. Dave and Gemma aren’t thinking big. They’re just trying to survive.

Boxes is a play about London’s booming property market and what it really means for people here and abroad.

The play was be the first production at London Theatre Workshop's new venue in Leadenhall Market.

'A smartly written,  emotionally engaging piece, which sets up the two parallel stories but finds ways to have them subtly overlap. Boxes actively addresses many of the issues facing young Londoners, and shows us that the real victims are the ordinary people wanting to live in this extraordinary city. The performances of Emily Florence Hutchings and Moj Taylor as Gemma and Dave are particularly convincing at portraying a relationship in reverse, having to undo the idea of years of built-up resentment to become a loving and hopeful young couple again, which they do brilliantly.' Audience Reviews;

'A clever, affecting and extremely well acted play with a most inventive set. Well done on the sound design too.'
'Cast members were great. Clever and moving writing'
'Really loved the balance (yin and yang?) and the stripping away of the onion layers as the play progressed. Found myself talking about it on the way home and thinking about it this morning and seeing new facets and commentary in it. What better can you want in a play?'
'Beautifully constructed and written, and gripping right to the end. We carried on discussing it on the train home. And very well acted too, with Dave and Gemma being a particularly strong pairing. His opening scene was superb, done with real sensitivity, it drew you in immediately.'
'A very well written and performed piece particularly relevant today'

Casual Encounters

Terrific, very funny, with brilliant use of gags to achieve and support the three act structure.' Richard Bean, (One Man, Two Guvnors) One Act Play Festival, The Orange Tree, Richmond

'An exploration of marriage, relationships, gender roles, class, mores and more. Each is interwoven into a strong piece of theatre. The acting is assured and the direction crisp. I cancertainly recommend it to you' Buxton Fringe Review
